Nestled between Lake St Lucia's False Bay, Mkuzi Game Reserve and neighbouring Phinda Private Game Reserve lies a nature-lover's paradise. The property Dhlamini extends over 515.97 ha on the Maputaland coastal plain in the zone of influence of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa's first World Heritage Site. Dhlamini occurs in the Maputaland Centre of Plant Diversity and Endemism and in the Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany Biodiversity Centre where plant and animal species diversity and endemism are high and threatened by development.
The game farm is situated 25 km by road north of the town of Hluhluwe. Mkuze and Hluhluwe Airports provide nearby access for small aircraft.
A range of different natural habitats on Dhlamini provides sanctuary for a wide diversity of indigenous plant and animal life.
Different vegetation types: forest in the east, including patches of critically endangered Sand Forest and Tamboti forest; many small islands of woodland in the centre of the property and grassland with smaller islands of woodland in the west; woodland/forest lining the Munyawana River in the south-west.
The Munyawana River enters Dhlamini from the adjoining Munyawana Game Reserve which forms part of Phinda Private Game Reserve. Six dams and several ephemeral pans provide water for wildlife. Several non-perennial streams drain the property and feed into the Munyawana River.
Dhlamini provides refuge for the Suni. Red Duiker, Impala, Reedbuck, Nyala, Giraffe, Zebra, Bush Pig, Warthog, Porcupine, Spotted Hyena, Caracal, Leopard and many other mammals are found on the property. The habitat in the area favours Nyala especially.
Sandy soils cover most of the property. Ancient dune cordons have long since eroded into a relatively flat expanse (<1: 20; <5%) and gentle slopes (1: 20 – 1: 6; 5-16%). One of the highest points on the property is 55 m above sea-level, while one of the lowest points is 27 m asl.
The area experiences a subtropical climate with a mean annual rainfall of 703.9 mm which falls predominantly in the summer months with a mean maximum in February (111.5 mm) and mean minimum in June (14 mm). Summers are hot with the highest monthly mean temperatures in January and February (25.7 C) and winters are warm (July monthly mean: 17.8 C). Mean daily maximum temperature is highest in January (30.7 C) and lowest in June and July (24.5 C), while mean daily minimum temperature for these months is considerably lower (January: 20.7 C; July: 11.1 C).
Fossil Ammonites which are protected are found on the property. They provide an ancient snapshot of the marine life when the area was covered by sea around 136 million years ago.
A network of sand roads provides access to different parts of the property.
